Chapter ten

An emotion flushes through my veins and propels me forward. It’s the dismay I felt earlier upon learning there might be a way to kill the dragons, but times ten. I don’t stop to wonder why my reaction is so strong, and I don’t pause to remind myself that I should be playing it cool so no one suspects me. I don’t think at all. I just act. I barely hear Anthem’s loud, confused whisper as she tries to call me back. “Chessie,” I call loudly as I stride toward her.

Chessie jumps and whirls around, wary. “What?” she says, scanning me over, probably thinking I’m some sort of fanboy who recognized her.

Lexie is staring at me, shock and guilt rippling over her face until her expression settles on anger. “What the hell?” she demands. “Did you follow me?”

“Technically I followed you,” Anthem says, stepping a little in front of me and folding her arms. She whispers to me, “What exactly are you doing, genius? This wasn’t the assignment.”

“Wait,” Chessie says, sticking up a hand to ward us off. “Lexie, do you know these folks?” Without waiting for an answer, she turns back to us, eagerness lighting her expression. “Do you guys know the fake Star Slayer too? Or even better, the real one? I could totally use some extra interviews. You know, talk about what he’s like, if you feel betrayed now that his secret’s out, all that jazz.” Without waiting for an answer, she slings her backpack off and pulls out the tripod device, which seems to be some sort of expensive camera.

I open my mouth and then stall out. Real Star Slayer? My gaze cuts to Lexie, who is clenching her jaw stubbornly but also not meeting my gaze. “What do you mean?” I ask cautiously.

Chessie grins, glancing up from the tripod. “You can watch the full reveal on my channel later today with everyone else.”

Lexie’s brow furrows. “Wait, you said you were only going to funnel this intel to your military contacts.”

“Funnel what intel?” I say, too loudly, but Chessie is ignoring me as she checks her watch.

“There we go, the vid finally came through,” she says with a triumphant grin aimed at Lexie. “Thanks, girl. You’ve been a big help. I’ll be sure to give you a credit at the end of my cast.”

“Please don’t,” Lexie says, tight-lipped.

Anthem has had enough. She barges into the middle of our little stand-off and throws out her arms like she’s breaking up a fight. “All right, that’s it,” she declares. “If you guys don’t tell me what is going on in the next three seconds, I swear to the gods, Lexie, I will call Z and see if he can deduce what you’re up to.” It’s a bluff, and also the exact wrong thing to say. Lexie’s eyes snap with fury and she leans forward, hands curling into fists.

“Go ahead,” she snarls, “call that bastard. Tell him as of today, everyone will know his dirty little secret.”

“What secret?” I demand.
